Narcissus and Goldmund

Overview

Narcissus & Goldmund are two men whose contrasting natures embody different paths to self-discovery and understanding the world. Narcissus, a young monk devoted to reason, faith, and spiritual discipline, recognizes in Goldmund, his gifted pupil, a soul too restless for the confines of monastic life. Following his inner calling, Goldmund leaves the monastery and ventures into the world, discovering its beauty and cruelty through love, loss, and art. While Narcissus seeks truth through contemplation and thought, Goldmund comes to understand it through emotion and lived experience. Their profound bond becomes Hermann Hesse’s meditation on the timeless tension between spirit and flesh, reason and emotion, and the two distinct paths that lead toward a single truth.
