Book I

The first book introduces the Karamazov family and the tensions that lie beneath their troubled relationships. Fyodor Karamazov, a selfish and dissolute father, stands at the center of conflict between his three sons: the passionate Dmitri, the intellectual Ivan, and the deeply religious Alyosha. As their opposing personalities, beliefs, and desires collide, old resentments and profound moral questions begin to surface.
